     There is also some fascinating speculation that humans may be the 
result of cross breeding between pigs and monkeys, and that cross 
species mating may not be as rare as currently believed.  Another odd 
species is the platypus, having genetic material from both birds and 
mammals in a way which suggests cross species mating.  It is so 
improbable it would take millions of years of occasional mis-mating for 
things to line up right for something to happen... Well, we are 
beginning to see that animals sometimes do develop odd interspecies 
friendships, so perhaps it is millions of years later.  (Though that is 
not the only way in which genomes may fuse.)

     At any rate, the new ideas are causing scientists to think in new 
ways, so even if the hypothesis is wrong, as it probably is, the mental 
activity has some benefit.  After all, velikovsky was wrong, but we now 
understand his premise that the orbits are not as stable as then 
expected, proved correct; and a meteoric encounter on the night of June 
29, 3123 BC created the legends of Sodom and Gomorrah.  The resulting 
climate downturn was likely responsible for the tone of the vengeful God 
in the Old Testament.

      Humans share equite a bit of genetic material with pigs, but one 
may also argue that the basic biochemistry is common to all living 
things.
