My daughter received this one Friday. Interesting idea, we'll see what
effect it may have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE GREAT "GAS OUT"
It's time we did something about the price of gasoline in America!
We are all sick and tired of high prices when there are literally
millions of gallons in storage.
Know what I found out? If there was just ONE day when no one
purchased any gasoline, prices would drop drastically.
The so-called oil cartel has decided to slow production by some 2
million barrels per day to drive up the price. I have decided to see
how many Americans we can get to NOT BUY ANY GASOLINE on one particular
day!
Let's have a GAS OUT! Do not buy any gasoline on APRIL 30,
1999!!!!!
Buy on Thursday before, or Saturday after. Do not buy any gasoline on
FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1999.
Wanna help? Send this message to everyone you know. Ask them to
do the same. All we need is a few million to participate in order to
make a difference.
Let me know how many you will send out. We CAN make a difference.
Thanks.

Hi Lee.
Where I'm at (Florida) it's about $1.19/gal. That's quite a jump
from a few days ago! How does one budget with prices jumping around
like long eared jackrabbits???
So, I take that day off and sleep in.

That's just over $3.00/gal less than what we have to pay over here in
Britain - I wouldn't complain about $1.19/gal. In fact, In Britain the price
of a litre of petrol goes up by about 6-8 pence per year at the moment.

That's true Lee,
But, you must consider the fact that minimum wage here is
roughly $5.00-$5.20/hr and most places will only scheudule
for about 30 hrs/week to keep from giving "full time"
benefits. So that's about $150.00 to $160.00/week
before tax deductions. Gas would run then $23.00 for a
fillup assuming that one gets a fiil-up once a week.
That doesn't leave much for luxuries such as food/rent
utilities etc.
Just some thoughts I had....

This little piece is simply astounding. I am continually surprised to
run across people or mentions there of who are just as bent and twisted
as I am. I just hope the maniac who actually sent that specimen in to
the Smithsonian wasn't expecting a serious response. I sort of feel for
the guy.
So anyway, thanx for this correspondence Eugene, and you have proven
consistently to be much more interesting than the rest of the "Mad
Scientists" on that mailing list. Oh well.

Dear General,
Thank you for your comments. It is amazing, isn't it! I
would give quite a lot to see the letter and sample that
was sent in!!! That would be pure gold as far as entertainment
goes!!
Since we are in the time of "THE DOOM OF APRIL 15th" I'm
posting some research I found to be quite illuminating.
...and funny too!
Sincerly MAD

About that Barbi doll head sent to the Smithsonian. There are lots of "good
stuff" laying around if you are lucky enough to find it.
My Rottweiller has burried bones from the butcher in my back yard.
They are big enough to be mistaken for human. I have found ancient time
pieces in the grass, not working except for one that said Timex and was still
ticking.
When on vacation my kids would get up at dawn and search the bottom of the
hotel swimming pool for jewlery and change. They found tons of the stuff.
Not so long ago in a near by college town, a farmers wife took a most
unusual bone away from her dog. She called the police, they found the cript
the kids had broken into and returned the bone to the rightful owner. Problem
was, the family of the deceased woman wanted to know where her jewlery had
gone.
Then there is the huge flap about the bones found of what scientists
say is a European man who died about 6,000 years ago in Washington state.
This has got the native americans in an uproar, I have to laugh at what the
results would mean to everyone if it were proven that the Polish are the REAL
Native Americans. Come to think about it, that war dance around the campfire
could be done to the polka.

Hey Vesta!!
They found the remains of a human being that died over
12,000 years ago in the channel islands near Los Angeles.
Of course, with all the cosmetic surgery available in
California, she did'nt look a day over 8,000.

Hello Gene: I formatted one of the drives on my computer last weekend
reloaded.
AOL has me screaming ... I cannot get to the main url for Mad-Scientists.
Would you be kind enough to email the correct info?
Many thanks in advance! Have a great day/evening.
Sarah.

Dear General,
This compilation of ideas for activities in a computer
lab is just what the (MAD) doctor ordered!
With loud voices shouting in my head....
Gene Valido
P.S. Edmond Scientific made the horrible error of
sending ME a CATALOG!

Hi John,
I have an even better idea....let my ex-wife sit on about
2.2 kg of U-238. I PROMISE that would create enough pressure
to cause a fusion reaction!!!
That might work.

Marvin! <*sigh*>
He was TRULY a genius. My kind of lunatic. I once
tried to get in contact with ACME to get a PU-238
Explosive Space Modulator, but the operator at
information kept hanging up on me. I don't
understand!

Subject: Preventable Tragedy?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Another tragedy - the school killings in Colorado. Sorrow abounds
across our nation. Tears are shed, prayers are said. Another round of
questions - Why did it happen? What was the cause? Could it have been
prevented? What was the common thread in this and other bloody scenes
in America?
The usual suspects are being paraded out by the media and politicians:
guns, a violent society. No doubt new legislation will soon be proposed
to cure the problem. All we have to do is ban guns, and pass more laws
to ban violence in schools - the common answers from politicians and the
Department of Education. Oh, and give us more money for education and
policemen. Following this latest tragedy, one popular talk show host
suggested that he'd rather see a policeman every ten feet in school
halls than to see a tragic event occur again.
But can such measures stop the problem? We have passed laws to ban
violence in schools, and placed police officers in the schools. Have
they been effective in reducing the tragedies? Gun laws have been
enacted, and more law enforcement officers have been put on our
streets. Has crime been impacted?
As a former instructor and substitute teacher, I cannot claim to have
all the answers, but I see two common threads in the problems I have
witnessed in our classrooms. Our children are no longer taught the
basics of morality and discipline.
I recall as a young child seeing an old framed copy of the Ten
Commandments on the walls of the schools I went to, and joining with my
classmates in a prayer at the start of the school day. And I remember
being taught to respect others by the rules I was taught at school and
home, and being physically punished when I transgressed the rules of
conduct expected of me - both at school and at home.
Compare my upbringing with that of a student I had in one school just a
couple of years ago. About two years older and bigger than the rest of
fifth graders in his class, he had been moved from state to state after
his parents divorced. He was constantly disruptive and inattentive. He
started fights in class, and tried to tear things up, like his desk.
When I stopped him, he cursed me and told me quickly that I couldn't do
anything to hurt him, and that he was on probation already anyway. He
wanted to be kicked out of school - after all, that school was only
number eight for his school year, and in a few weeks, his dad and his
dad's girlfriend were going to move him again anyway, so what did it
matter?
I ask you - what type upbringing did that boy have? Think he knew
anything about morality? Think this young man was an exception? In
teaching thousands of children from pre-kindergarten to high school
seniors, I found broken homes to be a common link in the almost every
disruptive student I talked with. Not a scientific study to be sure,
but none the less true. And almost all of them said they had never been
to a church.
Our society looks at school disasters and violence and wonders what is
wrong. My answer sounds so simple. We need to go back to teaching our
children the basics of Judeo-Christian morality, from the beginning to
the end of their education. Without a feeling for what's right or wrong
our children will continue to experiment with alternative behaviors -
and threaten all of society.
This must be backed up with corporal punishment - not with various
psychological ploys used in our classrooms today. There are all types
of variations of so-called punishment used in todays classes. In some
it includes brief counselling to ask why a student does things, or
denial of some privilige for a few moments. If a child continues to be
a problem, he or she is sent to the principal's office to sit out of
class for a while. This is not punishment. It is rewarding the child's
bad behavior. Misbehavior is only encouraged by this approach.
The answer to our societal problem is the combination of moral teaching
and physical punishment, the teaching of what's right and immediate
punishment when the rules are broken. It must start in the entire
school system, from youngest to the graduating classes. Almost two
generations have not received this most basic education, and you can
easily see the results in our country. It has served our country well
for years, until we removed religion from our classrooms and the fear of
punishment from our children's behinds.
We must go back to that system - or we will continue to pass laws and
restrict the freedoms of our entire society while we listen for the next
eruption of gunfire.
If you feel my answer is valid, send this to others - your friends,
relatives, educators, the media and most importantly, your legislative
representatives at all levels, from our local governments to our
president and the Department of Education. We have tried other
approaches, and many educators and psychologists have earned degrees
writing papers to eliminate religion and punishment from our schools.
We are now reaping the results of those changes. Do you want things to
change or not?
Thank you,
Jack Lahue

i must compliment you on a very well thought out, concise, and intelligent
reaction to the horrific events of yesterday. passing more gun laws is not
the answer. from what i gathered, they had two sawed-off shotguns and an
ak-47 which are outlawed any how so the law didnt help there. you can get
instructions on bomb making in your local library and, i'm afraid, the
internet. just last week i was got a spam trying to sell me the "anarchist's
cookbook" which i promptly deleted.
however, i do not agree with all the points you make such as religion and
corporal punishment. this is a more diverse society now than when i was in
school so teaching bible stories and the like is inappropriate. im sure a
jew or a taoist or muslem would not appreciate being told about the sermon on
the mount or listening to a psalm. nowadays i would'nt like some teacher
giving my children an education in thier concept of morality. that sort of
thing is for the home. the schools are to teach my kids the skills needed to
survive in society. things like reading, writing, math, science, and things
like that. perhaps a compromise can be worked out. would it be possible to
use texts other than the Bible? how about a reading from the Talmud or the
Koran? is Buddah or Mohamud so foreign as to be kept from our kids? try
reading some of them. youll find the message is not entirely different.
corporal punishment? you never get any good result from violence.
additionally, would you trust some teacher to beat on your kids? we dont
have to hit ours cause we raised them properly. the answer here is good
parenting. pay attention to them. love them. talk to them. give your life
to them. thats what good parents do best
with best regards,
bob

This event points out once again the intrinsic sickness in our society.
For things like this to happen, there has to be something horribly
wrong in the foundation of our society. I don't know if it's always
been there, but it's sure there now. No laws, no ratings of TV shows,
no "faith in god" will ever cure whatever it is that eats at people and
poisons their minds until they have to lash out. In the face of this, I
realize that I am just one man and have no idea how these problems can
be fixed or why we even have them.

Round and round it goes again.
I saw the horror that was printed in our local paper. Had
I not known better, I would have belived that the photo was
taken in Kosovo.
A Sheriff's offical was heard to remark "Everything that
happened her was already illegal...more laws are not the answer."
There is a profound secret here. It's not laws but RESPECT for
law that is lacking. That's the major difference. The answer is
not just religion, but the respect for law and others that it
teaches. Putting others ahead of self. Duty, Resonsibility,
Common Sense are terms that seem to be on the endangered
species list!
Disicpline is almost non-existant in our society. We have
become the victims of instant gratification. The "I" monster
is truly running amok.
Perhaps if fundamental changes are implemented NOW, the
future may see less of this kind of horror. Any change
must be consistant, no more start/stop nonsense!

Religion isn't the answer. Religion allows for people to sidestep the
responsibility for things that they do, and it also facilitates
atrocity. I'm not saying that religion is bad, per se, but sometimes it
just doesn't help very much.

Hi,
I feel obliged to comment on this thread; perhaps an outsider's
perspective might be useful to you?
Rather than teach ("indoctrinate?") religion to children in school,
it would almost certainly be better to teach basic morality by
itself, without any religious trappings*. The various religions of
the world have caused bloodshed on a scale to make an incident like
this one insignificant by comparison.
On the subject of corporal punishment, having myself been in the
position of trying to enforce discipline through only verbal
punishment, I have to advocate it over counselling etc.
As to your gun laws, you're right: banning guns would not have
stopped these murders, especially if as you say they were using
weapons banned already. As I see it, what you need is for a
gradually increasing ban on firearms, to slowly remove the "gun
culture". There is no longer any _need_ for such a culture. No
militia is needed to protect against the evil British empire (as if!)
and the Soviets are not going to invade you. And the right of an
individual to carry lethal weapons _in self defence_ is only
necessitated when you are likely to be attacked by someone with
lethal weapons - ie. in a culture where guns are commonplace.
--> as to the practical side, I've no idea how you remove 200 million
weapons despite strong opposition; that's why it needs to be done
slowly.
Anyway, that's my two penn'orth,
Stay in perspective, remember the Serbs do this to many more people
every day,
John
*I say this as a Christian of sorts, although perhaps I should not
use that as a debating weapon. If someone wants or needs religion
they should be free to choose their own**.
**members of intolerant religions, take note. I don't appreciate
being subject to the death sentence in some Islamic countries,
either.

This isn't the first school shooting, either -- we've been
getting what, one every six months or so? One of the
early ones was in Springfield, Oregon, last year while
I was still living there.

I agree with the early poster who discussed religion,
discipline. I also agree with Eugene here.
Of course, every time something like this happens, everyone
gets a chance to put their preferred theories on parade,
and we'll see every single one across the evening news
this week.
I really wish I knew the cause, and the answer, so we could
fix it all.
It seems to me that there have always been, and always will be,
sociopaths -- people who truly have no emotional connection
to their fellow human being. This is independent of their
belief in a supreme being, personal discipline, or even the
support and love of their family. And if there is no sense of
being a *part* of another creature, then there will be no
qualms about making it the object of whatever whims occur --
including killing them when frustrated. Who thinks twice about
killing an annoying insect in their home? What if the kid in
the desk next to you meant no more to you than that insect?
These people, however, seem to be causing more harm, on
a larger scale, at an earlier age.
Probably so many problems in our culture can be traced back
to a loss of community -- a sense of being a part of a larger
thing, working for a common goal and good. Gangs give kids
this sense, and they are thriving. We are no longer members
of a neighborhood, a tribe, or even a coherent culture. There
is almost no binding social force to keep us together. And there
is also very little support between neighbors, oversight where
the entire community keeps a collective eye on each other's
kids, and communication to let parents know when things are
going wrong.
These are all grand sweeping thoughts, but it all comes down
to my own opinion and perception and prejudices. And even
if it were all true, and even if we could "fix" our nation and people
by building strong communities and forging ties with our
neighbors, how would that even be encouraged?
Perhaps there is no fix for the problem, and we will see our
country ultimately destroyed by it, like Soddom and Gomora (sp?).
That may in fact pave the way for a new society that is stronger,
or it may (as so many revolutions) just be something worse.
Edwin!

As a single parent of two attending High School, one 9th and another 12th the
tragedy has effected me deeply. You all talk about the problems as if it
were on a global scale, as if the entire country needs to address it.
I think it is a simple case of extreme bad parenting and if you expect to
change that in the future you also will have many cases of civil right
violations so in the long run a simple solution needs to be met. More
employees on the school grounds and manditory parent participation, manditory
and the additional employees will be there to handle it. The school
employees should be paid and respected as well as one would their doctor
because what we expect of them is the same. There need to be more medical
professionals employed by each school who will be trained to examine
alternative behaviour and make the necessary communications in those
situations.
The High School kids most of the time time do not take the strange behaviour
of some of their peers seriously, that's because they're not trained to,
they're kids but some certainly should.
It wasn't preventable this time, but there are solutions for the future.
Thanks for listening,
Geneva

I am going to be politicaly incorrect here and put in my feelings aout
these shootings.
The one thing that stands out about all these incidences is
that the kids involved were SMART. Yup, these kids were different from the
other kids. Some were reading works of thought written by people 2 or 3
generations back. While their friends were hanging about partying , these
kids were studing how to build a bomb, learning German, a foreign language.
I keep hearing people talk of watching out for a sign that the kids may
become crazed ie: dressing different, acting different, just being different
is enough to allert parents and school that the kid needs some councling.
BULL, kids that act different are the smart, cleaver inventive
ones. They should be channeled into doing what they do best. It is
dangerious to expect kids or adults to all act, look and dress the same way.
My heart goes out to the parents of the boys who caused this
awful thing to happen. Their kids showed they had wonderful potential and
because no one realised just how cleaver they were, they fell into evil ways.
When a child distances themselves from others, developes interests
other then their pears, that is the child that is extrodenary and will become
inportant if guided correctly. To insist there is something wrong with a
child that marches to the beat of another drum is to trample the future
scientists, artists, religious leders.
The normal slow witted kids do not plan or invision such carnage.
Only the gifted can create chaos. These kids who are different may be the
answer to our problems in the future. Instead of treating them as wierd or
worthless, give them a reason to place their energy to doing good works.
When genious goes unappreciated the genious often turns to horrid acts
in order to gain recognation. When a kid sees a classmate with an IQ of 95
become idolised by the other kids and adults because they can throw a ball or
run fast while they themselves are ignored because they are thinking over the
heads of even the adults, well, violence will occure. I am surprised it
does not happen more often, there are alot of brillient kids out there that
are looked down on because they pierce their body or dye their hair green.
Society tries to equate different with being bad, that is so some
in society can control the actions of others. I believe different is GOOD,
when anyone thinks different, behaves different, that person is thinking for
themselves, not being lead like a sheep. Adults must get off their duff and
work with these kids. Sure they are a pain in the a-- but come on here, to
be a mentor to a child who will someday do great things is a blessing onto
yourself. If teachers want students who are predictable, unchallanging to
their time and intellect, then the teachers should be teaching dog obedience.

Hi guys,
I also would like to address the sterotyping that the
media will be engaging in soon. The people known as Goths.
I live in the "World Capital" for the Gothic lifestyle, Tampa, Fl.
Despite their dress, these kids are
<1>. Very hardworking. A HUGE majority are working AND in college.
<2>. Family Oriented, they have a STABLE family unit and their
children are very well behaved and well cared for. Happy too.
<3>. They are often blessed with above average intelligence.
They apply it in very constructive ways. Many are great artists,
writers. Some are well versed in the ways of the PC.
<4>. They are overwhelmingly NON-VIOLENT. They are also
much more tolerant of others than most.
These are only my personal observations of course, I live near and
work with them on a very regular basis. Our local media
seem to think that these
people are from somewhere on the far side of Pluto.
My brother once had to teach at a school where many of these
Goths were. He said, "You can give me ALL of them, all day,
My GOD, They actually do their assignments!!"
Just some random thoughts from the peanut gallery

I have read all of your thoughts and now must add my own. I teach at a
small school in eastern Wisconsin (360 students and the High School).
This has been a large topic in my classes. The thing that my students
brought up which is very disturbing is: When asked by a student if this
could happen at our school, there was at least one student who responded
with "YES" and then proceded to give names of students with "hit
lists".
One student even said that two years ago, he had the potential to do
such a thing (thank god he didn't).
The question remains "What are we to do about this?"
Let me fill you in on a few things at the public school level.
1) Respect: This word is often expressed as a problem that students
have none. The philosophy of our educational system is that the student
is the most important thing. My question with this is "If the student
is the most important thing at the school, why should they respect
anything less important than themselves?"
2) Morals: How can a teacher who sees several hundreds of students for
less than an hour per day teach what is right or wrong when they go home
and see their parents doing what is wrong. We can only reinforce what
has been already taught to them for several years.
3) Fix the problem: A school teacher/counselor/principal can only
detect a problem within a student. They can refer the student to a
psychologist. However, if the parent does not want their child seeking
professional help, they do not have to. The only way that a school can
legally do anything is to wait for the student to do something drastic
enough to be kicked out of the school. Yes, this only sends the problem
to another school, but legally that is all that a school can do (we
currently have a middle school student who brags about how many schools
he has been kicked out of. His parents say that there is nothing that
they can do to prevent the student from this behavior).
4) Responsibility: This is something that must be taught at home and
reinforced in the school. I see many times when a student decides to
skip school (to see a concert, get a tan etc.) and their parent calls
the school to have them excused for being sick. Also, if at any time a
student gets in trouble, they must pay the concequences. Too often, the
parent blames a teacher for picking on their child and refusing the
punishment that their child must take. If a child does not learn
responsibility, they will believe that they can get away with anything.
To finish. Being a parent involves much responsibility and sometimes
sacrifice. Parents must know where their children are, who they are
with, and what they are doing. If not, making 30 bombs in the bedroom
is a very easy thing to accomplish. While watching the reports on this
event, I heard a news reporter state that it is a sad thing that parents
now have to worry if their child will come home alive. I believe that
the statement should be "Do I know my child well enough to know that
they won't kill someone else?"

I don't know, guys. I don't quite equate having a hitlist to blowing
everybody away. I had a hit list when I was in high school, because I
hated most everybody. The thing is, I didn't do it, I just sort of
fantasized about it (although that's too strong a word) and then I went
no further. And that's it. And now, here I am, a respected member of
society and a mad scientist. People blame this tragedy on all sorts of
things, like watching "Heathers" or listening to KMDFM, but really,
come on. I'm not saying that none of these things contributed to what
happened... although they were a very small part of it. And about
teaching morals and all that, well I don't really have an answer for
you, but I did go to a Christian private school where they tried to
"teach us morals" and the kids were all more twisted than any public
school kids I've ever known. The difference was, they thought they held
the moral high ground.

Yeah, Gene, I've noticed that. They're blowing the whole "black
trenchcoat" thing way out of proportion. No one seems to be paying
attention to the fact that the rest of the "mafia" didn't do something
like this. Actually, watching all of this coverage makes me wonder how
adults get so divorced from the experiences of youth.

Dear General
I thought that I'd lighten things up a little and talk
about something that's been going on at work.
I am employed as a programming consultant for a video game
company. In other owrds, I design the stupid things. We
have in the front office some people who are nosey. I mean
REALLY nosey! In 30-40 yrs. they'll be the ones who
spend their days SPYING on the neighbors.
Well, for the past few days, we've decided to have fun with them.
First we changed combo locks on the lab. Next, we started carrying
cables, interface cards and LOTS of printer papers around.
After that went on for a while...we then brought in very securely
sealed box that rattled alot. .
After this Area 51 stuff went on for two more days, we turned
the volume on one of the PC's in the lab and using CLIP TALK
read out loud (really loud) the following nonsense.
"SUBJECT ROSWELL DEVICE BASIC PROGRAMMING CAN BE CIRCUMVENTED
BY USING 2.38 CM ISOTOPE OF TRYLITHUM DERIVITIVE 99.87 PERCENT
PURITY. TO BE ATTACHED ACROSS ALIEN DEVICE POINTS 12a AND 11c
AND SUBJECT ROSWELL DEVICE WILL BE COMPLIANT FOR 181 YEARS 5 DAYS
4 HOURS 32 MINUTES 18 SECONDS. END ANALYSIS"
We KNOW for a fact that one of them had their ear to the door
before we turned the speakers up.
LOL!!!

Gneevah,
Not sure I agree with your remedies !
It is impossible to legislate for or predict the actions of warped minds.
Whatever attempts are made the "warped mind" will find a way round it .
Its an unfortunate but also sad fact of life that over time and populations
an extremely small percentage of beings at a given time act in a completely
unnacceptible but also unpredicatable way.

Possibly a closing thought.
I thought that I'd add something from Britain, where we have banned handguns after the tragedy of Dunblane.
We have banned certain videos, we have had weapons amnesties - but they do not work.
There will always be people who feel threatened because they are different, laughed at or ignored by the rest of us. These people will rarely take such extreme measures to get noticed, but it can, and does happen.
This was another horrific act of violence, on that we all agree. It cannot be described as mindless - they knew exactly what they were doing.
Increased security may be one of the only ways to stop a further tragedy like the one at Columbine High School.
Another step which President Clinton has hinted at, is a re-think of the Constitution. You have the right to bear arms, and it seems that anyone can buy a gun.
As an example, because the bad guys have guns, the good guys get guns to protect themselves, and so on it goes.
In my view, it will take a re-thinking of the way we live to truly prevent anything like this happening again.

hokay...
here's one we just pulled on our boss this april fools day. at our plant the
working types come in at 6:30am and the suits at 8:00. so when they show up
they dont really know who is in. we all called in sick...the whole qa
department...and showed up anyhow. our calibration guy called from inside
the factory and you could hear machines running in the back ground. at any
rate poor steve was passing cinder blocks by the eighth message and even had
the hr guy in his office. finally our secretary jumps in from an other
office and shouts "gotcha". now thats teamwork.

I see it's the same for the H's. Londoners go "Aht of the 'ouse," the H's go to Boston.
But where do the T's go - i.e. "writing a le'er" in England. The T's have disappeared!
Bring back the missing letters.
